Congealed Water

A new residential area in the Western Garden Cities. Oostoever Sloterplas, Amsterdam. This work of art is located between the concrete sludge tanks of the former sewage treatment complex. The intermediate area was designed by visual artist Peter Schoutsen in collaboration with the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts and the district. The dark paving stones symbolize the solidified sludge that has flowed from the bins. Schoutsen has created a drip line along the walls, creating a water curtain that provides an image of the overflowing bins. The water also nourishes the plants. The climbing hydrangea, also called 'Waterfoot', grow against the walls of the sludge tanks.
